Located a few kilometers from Matera, the Crypt of original sin "cripta del peccato originale" overlooks the Murgia Materana and is embellished with frescoes dated between the 8th and 9th centuries, realized by the artist known as the Painter of Flowers of Matera.
WHAT WILL WE DO DURING THE VISIT?
We will meet the tour guide at Piazza Vittorio Veneto and reach the Crypt. Located a few kilometers from the city of the Sassi, among vineyards and wheat fields, the Crypt of original sin faces the harsh environment of the Gravina di Picciano and represents a splendid testimony of rock art in southern Italy.
The Crypt of the Original Sin was the place of worship of a Benedictine monastery in the Lombard period. It is embellished with a cycle of frescoes dated between the 8th and 9th centuries, realized by the artist known as the Painter of Flowers of Matera.
It is also known as the Cave of the Hundred Saints for the numerous saints depicted in the frescoes on the walls. The visit will be fascinating even thanks to the sounds and lights that characterize its setting.
