 ⇒ WHAT TO BRING IN YOUR BACKPACK: when traveling by train, the ideal luggage isn’t too heavy and is easy to manoeuvre. Clothing, naturally, should be practical and light (including swimsuit and beach towel, because the opportunity for a dip will always be around the corner). Keep in mind that many stations are very close to the sea, so getting off for a quick swim is easy ... Don’t forget to bring a knack for adventure!

TRAIN HOLIDAYS IN PUGLIA: TOUR DEPARTURE FROM BARI

If you arrive in Puglia by plane or train and your first stop is Bari, then your itinerary will start right in heart of the regional capital - the city of “a thousand faces” – with its history spanning from the ancient to the contemporary. In Bari you will appreciate the authenticity of the inhabitants and the charm of an incredibly beautiful city. Your first overnight stay will be right here, in a characteristic B&B in the city. At sunset, there is a guided tour, where, amongst other things, you can taste the Bari focaccia and meet the famous ladies who prepare the orecchiette pasta.

TRAIN HOLIDAYS IN PUGLIA: TOUR DEPARTURE FROM TRANI

If you arrive in Puglia directly by train from the North, then we recommend Trani as a first stop. From 13 June there will be national connections served by the super-fast Italo train, with a stop in Trani, so it would be perfect to start your train tour of Puglia from here. Maybe you could stay one more night in this town which, in addition to the artistic and architectural beauty, in the evening turns into an open-air lounge and where, around the port area, you can enjoy aperitifs, fish dinners and good music in the many clubs.

TRAIN HOLIDAYS IN PUGLIA: COMPLETE INDICATIVE ITINERARY :

 

1 DAY: ARRIVAL IN BARI
 
Arrival in Bari overnight in B&B in a structure close to the station
 
 2 DAY: BARI STREET FOOD TOUR
 
Breakfast and street food of Bari Vecchia. Meeting with the local guide at 10.30 in Piazza Federico II di Svevia, in front of the Swabian Castle.
From here our tour will start with an external overview of the great Norman-Swabian castle of the thirteenth century. We will continue entering the maze of white streets to meet the famous ladies of old Bari, at work with orecchiette under the eyes of tourists. Next, we will visit the Cathedral of San Sabino, which was built between the 12th and 13th centuries and immediately after the Basilica of San Nicola, a splendid example of Apulian Romanesque architecture, where Catholic worship meets Orthodox traditions.
During the tour, you will stop at regular intervals to sample some of the city's famous street food specialties, from panzerotto to focaccia, to sgagliozze.

3 DAY: TRANI
 
Breakfast, check out and transfer by regional train to Trani (duration 40 min) Departure for a guided tour of the city, shared with a small group.
Meeting with the guide in Piazza Manfredi at 10.30 and visit of the Swabian Castle (external), internal and external Romanesque Cathedral to continue towards the medieval Jewish quarter, Giudecca, where there are still 2 synagogues. We will end the visit in the picturesque marina. Return by train to Bari.

4 DAY: POLIGNANO & MONOPOLI
 
Breakfast and check out. Transfer by train to Polignano a mare, the city of Domenico Modugno, Mr Volare. Rickshaw tour to discover the old city. You will admire the Roman and Renaissance traces of the city with the Roman bridge in Lama Monachile and the Marchesale Arch that will allow us to enter the old city. Purgatory Church (external) and first terrace overlooking the sea, followed by the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta (external) and the Chapel of Santo Stefano.
 
In the afternoon, transfer by train to Monopoli and meet the guide in Largo Plebiscito, near the church of S. Francesco. From here our journey through the beauties of the small seaside town will begin, admiring the rock church of Santa Maria del Soccorso (morning only) and the Baroque churches such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Madia and the church of Santa Maria del Suffragio (called del Purgatory). Then we will move to the seafront and the outside of the sixteenth-century Castle of Charles V. You will be able to admire numerous facades of ancient buildings, churches and the picturesque port finding ourselves in Piazza Garibaldi and then move on to the small tasting of local products. Return to Bari by train
 
5 DAY: LECCE
 
Breakfast, check out and transfer by train to Lecce, Arrival check in at the B&B in the historic center where you will leave your luggage. Lecce afternoon tour with an appointment in Piazza Sant’Oronzo in front of Caffè Alvino. From here we will start our journey through the beauties of the Baroque of Lecce and the testimonies of the Roman era, admiring the Cathedral, the Basilica of Santa Croce, the amphitheater and the Roman Theater, the exterior of the Castle of Charles V and numerous facades of ancient buildings.
  
 6 DAY: OSTUNI
 
 In the morning departure by train to reach Ostuni, once you arrive at the station an apecar will be waiting for you to reach the ancient village. Guided tour of the medieval village, with stops and explanation of the various monuments, panoramic terraces, photo stops ...
The Ape Calessino, thanks to its small size, is able to access every corner of the historic center. Return to the station and return to Lecce by train and free afternoon

7 DAY: LECCE
 
After breakfast, end of services at 10.00

If you wish to extend your stay, maybe to take a few days by the sea, we can organise a holiday in Salento.
